Meaning- Fire is a creator of life but can also be a destroyer of life. Fire is normally comforting and brings light, but fire as well brings fear, and has brought death upon millions. Millions of people were incinerated in the fire. Crematoriums were built and Jewish people were forced to put their own people into the fire. In the novel Night means death, pain, suffering, and hell that's everlasting.
Quote explaining meaning- " Look! Look at this fire! This terrible fire! Have mercy on me! Some pressed against the bars to see. There was nothing. Only the darkness of the night. (Wiesel, Pg.25)"
Why the quote explains the meaning
The quote explains the meaning because it shows how horrified Madame S is of whats to come. She mentions fire numerous times to the point where no one believes her or even bothers to look out the window anymore. Its only until they get to the point in Auschwitz that they basically "smelt" the future disaster that was yet to come. Elie also seems to have no belief in what Madame S is saying until he got to Auschwitz as well.
