This fits into the novel because, of his father being so thankful for what his son did for him. It's like his father given him more satisfaction than during Elie's childhood. Elie stated " The gratitude of a wounded animal" because, his father was really, really sad and curled help like a helpless animal which, he was but, not a actual animal. Elie father had to have a few mouthfuls of hot water or he will die from thirst. This will definitely leave Elie heartbroken and sad for his entire life. Elie father given Elie more satisfaction than during his entire childhood because, it was a life or death situation. If he didn't get the water he will die and if he did get the water he will live.
