Quote
" No prayers were said over his tomb. No candle lit in his memory. His last word had been my name. He had called out to me and I had not answered. I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But, I was out of tears. And deep inside me, if I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last!..(Wiesel, Pg 112)"
Why the quote fits into the novel
This fits into the novel because, nothing mattered or was cared for about Elie's father death. Elie was the only one that cared for his father. No one else cared. Elie couldn't weep because, he went through so much already. Watching the Jews getting tortured and killed right in front of him. And also, Elie being separated from his family. We know that Elie was heartbroken and very sad that, his father died. Probably, even inside him now. I think one reason why, Elie felt like he saw death when he looked in the mirror was because, of his family being dead. Especially, his father because, he saw everything that happened to his father. With protecting him, caring for him, and the death of him.
Significance
This is significant because, Elie father being dead didn't matter to anyone but, for Elie it did very much because, he loves and cares about his father so much. Also, he hated that he couldn't cry but, the reason why he couldn't cry was because, he have witnessed too much torturing and death of the Jews. With the hangings and torturing of the Jews. Elie pretty much had a rough time in his life because, he witnessed death in the face and he said he looked like death.
Also, his family being killed caused him to be sad, heartbroken, and mad in his life. Elie misses his family a lot. Elie have a picture of what his sister was wearing the last time he saw her. You can tell he misses his family. That is probably the only picture of his family he got because, the Holocaust caused a major impact on everything in his life.
